One of the biggest challenges in meeting the health needs of our community is access to primary care providers; in other words - doctors. If you have lived in our community for any length of time, you know how hard it can be to see a doctor, even during an emergency.
While attracting and retaining private doctors to stay and work in our community is always an option we work toward, the Sagkeeng Health Centre has also been working to meet this challenge by supporting our own community health nurses to become nurse practitioners.
In short, nurse practitioners are advanced practiced registered nurses who have completed advanced coursework and clinical education beyond that of a generalist registered nurse and who are qualified to diagnose and prescribe medications to treat most medical conditions without the supervision of a doctor.
