To support First Nations people and Inuit in reaching an overall health status that is comparable with other Canadians, Health Canada's Non-Insured Health Benefits Program (NIHB) provides coverage for a range of benefits. These benefits are provided to all registered Indians and recognized Inuit, regardless of income or place of residence in Canada when they are not insured by provinces and territories or other private insurance plans. Medical transportation is one of the benefits covered by this program.
The Sagkeeng Medical Transportation Program can provide you with transportation services so you can access "eligible, medically necessary health services" that cannot be obtained in Sagkeeng.
What is eligible?

What is eligible?
Medical Transportation benefits may be provided to help you to access the following types of services:
- Provincial/territorial insured medical services - Doctors' appointments, hospital care, and health programs enjoyed by all Manitobans
- Alcohol, solvent, drug abuse and detox treatment pre-approved by the NIHB Program.
NIHB has the following requirements for any registered band member who wishes to access Medical Transportation services:
- The medical service you require is not available locally;
- You have first used up all other transportation benefits available from other federal, provincial/territorial or private programs;
- Travel is to the nearest appropriate health facility only;
- The most economical and efficient means of transportation is used, taking into consideration the urgency of the situation and the client's medical condition;
- Transportation to health services is coordinated to ensure maximum cost-effectiveness; and
- Benefits must be pre-approved by the Health Canada regional office or can be approved after the fact if there is medical justification and it meets NIHB Program criteria.
